How to take lecture notes that are actually worth reading

The best lecture notes are not the most complete ones. They are the ones you can study from three weeks later. In practice that means picking one structure before class starts, capturing meaning rather than words during the lecture, and spending ten minutes afterward turning raw capture into something a future version of you can use. Cornell

Split the page into a narrow left column, a wide right column, and a strip across the bottom. Notes go on the right during the lecture. Afterward you write cues, questions and keywords in the left column, and two or three sentences of summary at the bottom. The method comes from Walter Pauk at Cornell University, who set it out in his study skills book in the early 1960s, and it has survived sixty years because the layout does something clever: it leaves a visible empty space that nags at you until you do the review pass.

Use it as your default. The cost is that the format is only as good as your discipline, and an unfilled cue column is just narrower notes.

Outline

Nested headings and indents, one idea per line, deeper indent for supporting detail. It is the fastest method to execute and the easiest to review, because the hierarchy on the page mirrors the hierarchy in the material. It works beautifully when a lecturer is organized and collapses when one is not, which is why many students end up writing a flat list of bullets and calling it an outline. Charting
